Stained glass in the Great Hall

..

.

Recorded below are the details of the heraldic stained glass in the house at Charlecote, home for the Lucy family since at least the twelth century.

The details of the windows have been kindly provided by Chris Purvis who has carried out the research at Charlecote.

The original stained glass in the Great Hall at Charlecote in Warwickshire, was made by Nicholas Eyffeler in 1558, during the first year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign and was removed and renovated around 1829 during the restoration of the house undertaken by George Lucy. Apparently some of it was broken at this time. The new extension, constructed during the restoration consisted of a library and dining room and these two rooms also included new stained glass. The work took almost seven years and was completed in 1836. Thomas Willement, stained glass artist to King George IV repaired and re-leaded the Tudor glass in 1833, setting out the descent from the marriage of one of the daughters of Lord Lucy of Cockermouth and Egremont in Cumberland, from the twelfth century to 1558. The Lucy emblem of white pike or luces ‘hauriant’ is emblazoned everywhere.

Notes:-

( 1. )

The Lucy arms are quartered with seven others, namely:-

1. Lucy 2. de Fourches 3. Huckford 4. MacKenzie 5. Pakenham 6. Planche 7. Haversham 8. Trayley

( 2. )

The Abbot and Empson arms may be switched. Burke lists Empson as:- Argent two Bends engrailed Sable and Abbott as:- Gules a Chevron between three Pears Or. So, according to Burke, the window in the Library with the Empson name has the Abbot arms. I suspect that Burke is incorrect.
