Notes for ADRIAN OR ROBERT DE LUCY: Information on the earliest records relating to the Lucy family at this time:- Richardo de Luceio (Richard de Lucy, presumed son of Adrian) is first mentioned in February 1131 together with his mother Aveline, kinswomen and heiress of William Ghot or Goth, in the charter of Séez. The surname Goth is apparently difficult to read in the original. It could actually read 'Goz'. Horace Round considered 'Goz' to be variant of 'Goiz' and 'Guiz', recognised variants of 'Gouviz' and 'Gouvis'. Richard de Lucy is recorded as Lord Gouviz in 1172. It should also be noted that Thorstein le Goz, Viscount of Avranches, was Viscount of the county of Hiémois between 1017 and 1025 and Lord of Falaise. There is a record in a charter regarding Sheppey Monastery c1131 referring to a fee and a half of plough-land of Richard de Lucy, in the Isles of Sheppey and Grain in Kent, acquired by William Archbishop of Canterbury (1123-1136), from Aveline, the mother of Richard de Lucy of Newington, Kent. Ralph or Richard Goiz held Newington 1107-16 before Richard de Lucy held it as a paternal inheritance granted by Henry I. In October 1138 Richard de Lucy was the Castellan of Falaise during the 18 day siege by Geoffrey, Earl of Anjou and was recalled to England in 1140 becoming the Constable of the Tower of London in 1151. He built his castle at Ongar, Essex in 1153. There is a record of a Geoffrey de Lucy (monk) mentioned at Savigny in 1137 (possibly a younger son). A group of monks from Savigny formed Jervaulx, Wensleydale in 1145 among other English settlements. A Ralph de Lucy is recorded in 1140-48 in a charter regarding Foucarmont Abbey. Their first Abbot came from Savigny when it was founded in 1130. Richard de Lucy's brother, Walter de Lucy was initially a monk at Lonlay-l'Abbaye, which is only five and an half miles from Domfront. Another of Richard's brothers was Robert de Lucy of Chrishall and Elmdon, Essex. Robert de Lucy had a further brother (probably step-brother) called Campion de Walkefare. Another was Herbert de Lucy, who according to Gervase of Canterbury, was in command of the royal garrison during the 3 week siege of Wareham in 1142. Richard de Lucy is recorded in 1172 as Lord Gouviz and Baron Crétot and militarily responsible for the the Bailiwick of Passeis, near Domfront, of which Lucé forms a part, providing one knight and five additional knights in his own service. Lucé lies geographically in Maine, and its real connection with Normandy dates from the occupation in 1092 of Domfront, the castle of Robert de Belleme, by Henry Beauclerc, the Count of the Cotentin. The connection between Henry I probably commenced at this time as illustrated by the charter for Séez Cathedral dated Feb 1131, in which Henry records a fief which he had bought from Richard de Lucy, and his mother Aveline. In the early 1100's, the Lord's of Mayenne surrendered the custody of their castles at Ambieres and Gorron and a Geoffrey de Goreham or Gorron (born in le Mans of a noble Normandy family), the Abbot of St. Albans (1119-1146), was summoned from Maine and is recorded as a kinsman of Robert de Lucy who he 'introduced to the royal circle'. Some sources record him as Geoffrey de Lucé. Walter de Lucy, brother to Richard de Lucy, originally a monk of Lonlay, lived for some time with Geoffrey de Gorham (again noted as a relative) prior to being appointed the Abbot of Battle Abbey (1139-1171). A nephew of Geoffrey, Robert de Goram (1151-1166) was a sacrist at St.Albans and there is evidence of the marriage of a Gorram to Cristina in the Thorney Abbey Annals. Geoffrey's remains were removed from the Chapter House at St.Albans Cathedral in 1978 and reburied in the choir of the Abbey Church. He had a brother William de Gorron who married Matilda, who had sons Giles, Ive, Robert (mentioned above) and Ralph, and a sister Olivia (who married Hugh, son of Humbald of Westwick, Hertfordshire.). Walter de Lucy, originally a monk of Lonlay, was Abbot of Battle from 1139 to 1171, the son of a Norman baronial house and brother to Richard de Lucy. Walter had prior to this for some time been living with Geoffrey of St. Albans, a relative. For many years before his death he was partially paralysed. Fact 4: Walter and Robert de Lucy were kinsmen of Geoffrey de Goreham or Gorron (born in le Mans), Abbot of St. Albans (1119-1146) Notes about WALTER DE LUCY: Walter de Lucy was the fifth Abbot of Battle and according to the Abbey Chronicle, ruled wisely and energetically for thirty-three years. He is specially lauded for his zealous zeal in upholding the numerous "liberties and dignities" of his House. The greatest contest in which he ever engaged was with the Bishop of Chichester, who claimed spiritual jurisdiction over the Abbey, and had obtained from Pope Adrian IV. a letter formally admonishing Abbot Walter to "obey faithfully his bishop and master." The cause was brought before Henry II. The Abbot pleaded eloquently in his own behalf, and his brother Richard de Lucy stood by him manfully, saying to the King, "This Abbey ought to be held in high account". Generation No. 2 2. EMMA2 DE LUCY (ADRIAN1) was born Abt. 1095 in Lucé, Near Maine, Normandy, France, and died after 1178 in Lucé, Near Maine. She married HENRY MAUNSEL, son of PHILIP MAUNSEL and AGNES DEMOISELLE. He was born Abt. 1080 in Buckinghamshire, England. Child of EMMA DE LUCY and HENRY MAUNSEL is: i. SIR. JOHN3 MANSEL, m. JOAN BEAUCAMP. Notes for EMMA DE LUCY: An Emma de Lucy, granted to Missenden Abbey a quit rent of 3s payable by Lesnes Abbey in respect of 12 acres held in Elmdon (Essex) c1200-1230; the money provided by herself and her brother Robert de Lucy and her lord Serlo de Marci. This Emma was daughter of Robert de Lucy, the brother of Richard de Lucy. 3. RICHARD2 DE LUCY (ADRIAN1) was born Abt. 1110 in (originally from) Lucé, near Domfront, Normandy, France., and died 14 July 1179 in Lesnes Abbey, Erith, Kent, England - buried in the Chapter House of his Abbey. Although Lesnes Abbey no longer exists, his tomb could still be seen in 1630, and upon the belt of the figure of a knight the fleur-de-lis, the rebus or name device of the Lucys was sculptured in many places. He married ROESIA (ROHAISE, RAHEIS OR ROYSIA) of BOULOGNE Abt. 1130, it is believed in Thorney Green, Suffolk, England. She was born Abt. 1110, it is believed, in Carshalton, Surrey, England and died 1148-1151 and was buried in the Priory of Holy Trinity or Christchurch, Aldgate, London. This is confirmed in a sealed charter of gift dated 1151 of 20/- to the Church from his rent of Newington in Kent. Faversham Abbey, Kent has also been suggested as the burial place of Richard de Lucy's wife, which was built by Stephen and Matilda to found a royal mausoleum for the House of Blois. They hoped that the dynasty would rule over England for generations to come. In fact it began, and ended, with them. Notes for RICHARD DE LUCY: RICHARD DE LUCY (d. 1179), called the "loyal", Chief Justiciar of England, appears in the latter part of Stephen's reign as Sheriff and Justiciar of the county of Essex. He became, on the accession of Henry II., Chief Justiciar conjointly with Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Leicester, and after the death of the latter (1168) held the office without a colleague for twelve years. The chief servant and intimate of the king he was among the first of the royal party to incur excommunication in the Becket controversy. In 1173 he played an important part in suppressing the rebellion of the English barons and commanded the royalists at the battle of Fornham. He resigned the Justiciarship in 1179, though pressed by the King to continue in office, and retired to Lesnes Abbey in Kent, which he had founded and where he died. Lucy's son, Godfrey de Lucy (d. 1204), was Bishop of Winchester from 1189 to his death in September 1204; he took a prominent part in public affairs during the reigns of Henry II., Richard I. and John. Richard de Lucy (d. 1179), Chief Justiciary; maintained the cause of Stephen in Normandy against Geoffrey of Anjou; recalled to England, 1140; Chief Justiciary jointly with Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Leicester (1104-1168), 1153-66; sole Chief Justiciary, 1166-79; excommunicated by Thomas Becket in 1166 and 1169 for his share in drawing up the constitutions of Clarendon (1164); commanded for Henry II in the insurrection of 1173. In April 1173 when Prince Henry rebelled against his father, King Henry II, Richard de Lucy together with Humphrey de Bohun III invaded Scotland in an attack against King William the Lion who supported Prince Henry and the destruction of the bishop's palace at Durham. They burned Berwick and penetrated deeply into Scotland. But when they learned of the landing of Robert de Beaumont (Earl of Leicester and friend of Prince Henry) in Suffolk (29 September 1173), they made a truce with William the Lion and marched against Beaumont. Chief Justiciar of England under Henry II, he came from Lucé near Domfront in western Normandy, and probably entered royal service under Henry I. He is recorded as a supporter of Stephen from about the year 1140, succeeding Geoffrey de Mandeville as Justiciar and Sheriff of Essex (1143). Henry II made him and Robert de Beaumont, second Earl of Leicester, Chief Justiciars jointly (c. 1155), and after Leicester's death in 1168 Lucy held the office alone. As one of the king's chief councillors he must be given part of the credit for the important legislation of the period, and during the struggle with Becket he was singled out by the king's enemies as a principal author of the Constitutions of Clarendon (1164). His role in holding together those loyal to the king in the great revolt of 1173-1174 was crucial. In 1179 he resigned his office and entered the religious life at Lesnes Abbey, Erith, Kent, founded by himself in 1178 in penance for his part in the events leading to Becket's death. He had been excommunicated by Becket in 1166 and again in 1169, and the archbishop's murder had been in part provoked by his refusal to lift the sentences he had passed upon his enemies. Richard de Lucy died at Lesnes on 14th July 1179. Once fulfilled, Richard de Lucy was constituted Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in 1156. Additional source information - Note: 1 The family appears to have taken its name from Lucé, a commune in the department of Orne, about 6 km. SE of Domfront, and in the Bailiwick of Passeis. In the return of the Norman fees of 1172 there occurs the following: "De Passeis . . . Ricards de Lucceio j militem et sibi xvij milites" (H.F., vol xxiii, p. 697 e; so also in Red Book, Rolls Ser., vol ii, pl 639, but beginning "De Baillia de Basseis"). It seems probable that this particular connection between Henry I and the southern border of Normandy may have first brought the family to the King's notice, a view which is supported by the fact that in a charter for Séez Cathedral dated Feb 1131, Henry mentions a fief which he had bought from Richard de Lucy, and his mother Aveline. [Complete Peerage VIII:257 note (b)] Note: 2 The first mention of this family is in a render made by King Henry I of the lordship of Dice, in Norfolk ('whether in requital of services, or as an inheritance, the record saith not' - nb: Richard de Lucy granted right to hold a market in Diss in 1152) to Richard de Lucie, who was Governor of Falaise, in Normandy, temp. King Stephen, and defended that place with great valour when besieged by Geoffrey, Earl of Anjou, for which heroic conduct he had a grant of lands in the county of Essex with the services of divers persons, to hold by ten knight's fees. In the subsequent contest between Stephen and the Empress Maud, he remained steady in his allegiance to the former and obtained a victory of some importance near Wallingford Castle. Upon the adjustment of the dispute, the Tower of London and the castle of Windsor were, by the advice of the whole clergy, placed in the hands of this feudal lord, he binding himself by solemn oath and the hostage of his son to deliver them up on the death of King Stephen to King Henry, which, being eventually fulfilled, Richard de Lucy was constituted Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in the 2nd of Henry II, A.D. 1156, and in three years afterwards, being with the king in Normandy, he was despatched to England to procure the election of Thomas à Becket, then lord chancellor, to the archiepiscopal see of Canterbury, vacant by the death of Theobald, Abbot of Becco. Soon after that he was appointed to the high office of Justice of England. In the 12th of this reign [i.e. 1166], upon the aid then assessed for marrying the king's daughter, he certified his knight's fees (lying in the cos. of Kent, Suffolk, and Norfolk) de veteri feoffamento, to be in number seven, and that his ancestors performed the service of Castle Guard at Dover, for the same, as also that he held one knight's fee more, de nova feoffamento, in the co. Devon. Note: 3 About this time Becket, having fled into Normandy from the power of King Henry, came to Wiceliac to celebrate the feast of the ascension, and observing several persons of distinction present, amongst whom was this Richard de Lucie, he ascended the pulpit and there, with lighted candles, pronounced the sentence of excommunication against them all as public incendiaries betwixt the king and himself, but being neither convicted nor called to answer, they appealed and entered the church. Soon after this (13th Henry II) during a temporary absence of the king beyond sea, de Lucie was constituted Lieutenant of England, and again in 1173, when the Earl of Leicester and others having reared the standard of rebellion in behalf of Prince Henry, he besieged, in conjunction with Reginald, Earl of Cornwall, the town of Leicester and, having reduced it, demolished its walls and laid it in ashes. Note: 4 In 1178, he founded the priory of Westwode in the diocese of Rochester in honour of St. Thomas, of Canterbury, the martyr, and began, about the same time, the foundation of the priory of Lesnes, in Kent, which he munificently endowed. In this priory he subsequently assumed the habit of a canon regular and departing this life soon after (about 22nd Henry II) [i.e. 1176], and was buried in the chapter-house there. Note: 5 He m. Rohais ---, and had issue, Geffrey, who d. in his father's lifetime, leaving Richard, his son and heir, who departing this life, s. p., before 1196, the inheritance devolved upon his aunt, Rohais; Hubert, who had the lordship of Stanford, in Essex, and hundred of Angre, for his livelihood, but d. s. p.; Maude, m. 1st to Walter Fitz-Robert, to whom she brought the lordship or Dice, and 2ndly, to Richard de Ripariis, and d. 27th Henry III, 1243, leaving issue; Rohais, m. 1st, to Fulbert de Dover, Lord of Chilham, in Kent, and 2ndly, Richard de Chilham. This Rohais, upon the decease of her nephew, succeeded to the estates of her elder brother and, upon the death of her younger brother, Hubert, she had livery of the whole barony on paying a fine to the crown in the 9th King John [i.e. 1208]. [Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage Ltd, London, England, 1883), pp. 335-6, Lucy, Barons Lucy] Note: 6 Richard de Lucy (the first of the family mentioned by Dugdale) was Constable of Falaise in Normandy for King Stephen, and held it so stoutly against Geoffrey Earl of Anjou that he was rewarded with thirteen additional knight's fees in Essex, including the town of Grinstead. He fought on the King's side throughout his contest with the Empress Maud, and routed the forces of the latter in a pitched battle near Wallingford. When the agreement between Stephen and Henry Duke of Normandy was entered upon in 1153, by which Henry was named as successor to the throne, "for the better securing of that Accord, the Tower of London, and Castle of Windsor, by the advice of the whole Clergy, were then given into the hands of this Richard de Lucie, he (by his solemn Oath) promising that upon the death of King Stephen he would faithfully deliver them to Henry; and for his more effectual performance of that Trust, gave up his own Son as a Hostage." (Dugdale). The new King, on his accession, rewarded and employed him. He had a grant of the whole hundred of Angre with other manors in Essex; and in 1162 was appointed Lord Justiciary of England, the highest post of honour that could be held by a subject. Note: 7 As an act of penance for the murder of Thomas Becket on 29 December 1170, Richard de Lucy chose to found an abbey within the boundaries of the Manor of Lesnes, of which he was Lord. "The Abbey of St Mary and St Thomas the Martyr" was founded in 1178 and built on a sloping site which lay between river marshes to the north and Westwood (now known as Abbey Wood) to the south. It was thus conveniently situated close to the River Thames, making it possible to get stone and other supplies to the Abbey site by boat, and to the main London to Dover road which soon became a busy thoroughfare for the thousands of pilgrims who travelled annually to Becket's shrine in Canterbury. The Abbey was a foundation for Augustinian or 'Black' Canons within the Diocese of Rochester. The first inmates probably came from Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate and the first Abbot, William, was consecrated in 1179. In July of the same year "Richard de Lucy, who, having assumed the religious habit, ended his days in the Church of Lesnes and was buried in the Chapter House". De Lucy donated half of his lands in Lesnes in his will although "the place was not finished, nor sufficient livelihood given to it, for it was at his death of no more livelihood but 9 marks a year". Note: 8 According to John Weever in his 1630 "Discourse on Funeral Monuments", he states that a Sir John Hippesley, the then owner of the Lesnes property, "appointed certaine workemen to digge amongst the rubbish of the decayed fabricke of the Church (which had laine a long time buried in her owne ruins, and growne over with oke, elme, and ashe-trees) for stones, and these happened upon a goodly funerall monument; the full proportion of a man, in his coate armour, his sword hanging at his side by a broad belt, upon which the flower-de-luce was engraven in many places: (being, as I take it, the rebus, or device, of the Lucies:) this, his (Sir Richard Lucie's) representation, or picture, lay upon a flat marble stone; that stone upon a trough, or coffin, of white smooth hewn asheler stone: in that coffin, and a sheet of lead, (both being made fit for the dimension of a dead body,) the remaines of an ashie drie carkasse lay enwrapped, whole, and undisjointed, and upon his head some haire, or a simile quiddam of haire, appeared; they likewise found other statues of men in like manner proportioned, as also of a woman in her attire and abiliments, with many grave-stones and bones of the deceased; to see all which, great confluence of people resorted, amongst which number I was not the hindmost." William Stukeley (1687-1765) the antiquarian, surveyed the ruins of Lesnes Abbey in April 1753 and his plan illustrates the position of the church and cloisters, together with the location of the founders tomb in the north transept of the church. Note: 9 On the 11th June 1178, Richard de Lucy founded the priory of Westwode (later known as Lesnes Abbey) in the diocese of Rochester, Kent in honour of St. Thomas, of Canterbury, the martyr, which he munificently endowed. In this priory he subsequently assumed the habit of a canon regular and departing this life soon after (about 1176), was buried there, possibly in the chapter-house. There is also a reference to "Anselm de Lucy, who granted to the Church of St. Thomas the Martyr of Leanes, for the benefit of his soul and for the soul of Richard de Lucy, his father, and Richard de Montfichet, his son 40/- of rent out of its land at Thorney, by Stowmarket, Suffolk". Obviously this is a previously unrecorded son of Richard de Lucy (Justiciar) - alternatively this could refer to Aveline de Lucy. Geoffrey de Lucy, Constable of Berkhamsted was also a benefactor. On the death of Richard de Lucy the patronage of Lesnes was continued by Godfrey de Lucy, his son, who entered the Church and became Bishop of Winchester (1189-1204). From other references, it is recorded that Emma de Lucy, granted to Missenden Abbey a quit rent of 3s payable by Lesnes Abbey in respect of 12 acres held in Elmdon (Essex); the money provided by herself and her brother Robert de Lucy and her lord Serlo de Marci. Emma was the daughter of Robert de Lucy, brother of Richard de Lucy. Besides the site, the founder granted to Lesnes Abbey the churches of Newington and Marden, and his brother Robert, the church of Elmdon in Essex. His son Hubert had the lordship of Stanford, Essex and the hundred of Angre for his lively-hood, but died without issue. Notes for ROESIA (ROHAISE, RAHEIS OR ROYSIA) OF BOULOGNE: Roesia was buried in Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate, London. This is confirmed in a sealed charter of gift dated 1151 of 20/- to the Church from his rent of Newington in Kent. The Priory of Holy Trinity or Christchurch, Aldgate, was the first religious house to be established inside the walls of London after the Norman Conquest, in 1107/8; one of the earliest Augustinian houses to be established in England and the first to be dissolved, in 1532. The nearby Hospital of St. Katharine (near St. Katherine's Dock in London) was founded by Matilda (Maud) wife of Stephen, in about 1148 as an act of remembrance of her two children (Baldwin and Matilda) who died and were buried in Holy Trinity Priory. Queen Maud, the wife of King Stephen of England, was the heiress of the Boulogne family and therefore was closely related to Sir Richard Lucy's wife (providing the gift of Chipping Ongar). It has been suggested elsewhere that Faversham Abbey was the burial place of Richard de Lucy's wife. The aim of Stephen and Matilda was to found a royal mausoleum for the House of Blois. They hoped that the dynasty would rule over England for generations to come. In fact it began, and ended, with them. King Stephen in 1154, his wife Matilda in 1152 and eldest son Eustace (Earl of Boulogne) in 1153, were all buried in the Abbey Church. When it was excavated in 1964 their empty graves were found close to the very centre of the choir. Their bones are said to have been thrown into Faversham Creek when the building was dismantled. Geoffrey's remains were removed from the Chapter House and reburied in the choir of the Abbey Church, St. Albans in 1978. SIR THOMAS LUCY (1532-1600), the English Warwickshire squire who is traditionally associated with the youth of William Shakespeare, was born on the 24th of April 1532, the son of William Lucy, and was descended, according to Dugdale, from Thurstane de Cherlecote, whose son Walter received the village of Charlecote from Henry de Montfort about 1190. Walter is said to have married into the Anglo-Norman family of Lucy, and his son adopted the mother's surname. Three of Sir Thomas Lucy's ancestors had been Sheriffs of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, and on his father's death in 1552 he inherited Sherborne and Hampton Lucy in addition to Charlecote, which was rebuilt for him by John of Padua, known as John Thorpe, about 1558. By his marriage with Joyce Acton he inherited Sutton Parli in Worcestershire, and became in 1586 High Sheriff of the county. He was knighted in 1565. He is said to have been under the tutorship of John Foxe, who is supposed to have imbued his pupil with the Puritan principles which he displayed as knight of the shire for Warwick in the parliament of 1571 and as Sheriff of the county, but as Mrs Carmichael Stopes points out Foxe only left Oxford in 1545, and in 1547 went up to London, so that the connection must have been short. He often appeared at Stratford-on-Avon as Justice of the peace and as commissioner of musters for the county. As Justice of the peace he showed great zeal against the Catholics, and took his share in the arrest of Edward Arden in 1583. In 1585 he introduced into parliament a bill for the better preservation of game and grain, and his reputation as a preserver of game gives some colour to the Shakespearian tradition connected with his name. Nicholas Rowe, writing in 1710, told a story that Lucy prosecuted Shakespeare for deer-stealing, and this Shakespeare aggravated the offence by writing a ballad on his prosecutor. The trouble arising from this incident is said to have driven Shakespeare from Stratford to London. The tale was corroborated by Archdeacon Davies of Sapperton, Gloucestershire, who died in 1708. The story is not necessarily falsified by the fact that there was no deer park at Charlecote at the time, since there was a warren, and the term warren legally covers a preserve for other animals than hares or rabbits, roe-deer among others. Shakespeare is generally supposed to have caricatured the local magnate of Stratford in his portrait of Justice Shallow, who made his first appearance in the second part of Henry IV., and a second in the Merry Wives of Windsor. Robert Shallow is a Justice of the peace in the county of Gloucester and his ancestors have the dozen white luces in their coats, the arms of the Lucys being three luces, while in Dugdale's Warwickshire (ed. 1656) there is drawn a coat-of-arms in which these are repeated in each of the four quarters, making twelve in all. There are many considerations which make it unlikely that Shallow represents Lucy, the chief being the noteworthy difference in their circumstances. Lucy died at Charlecote on the 7th of July 1600. His grandson, Sir Thomas Lucy (1585-1640), was a friend of Lord Herbert of Cherbury, and was eulogized by John Davies of Hereford in 1610. The Charlecote estates eventually passed to the Rev.
